Venture into the Winelands
The Cape Winelands is South Africa’s largest wine producing region. Only 45 minutes outside of Cape Town, this region is ideal for wine tasting tours, cheese festivals and home to numerous farms where you can pick cherries, strawberries or olives.
The region is also renowned for its five star accommodation, where you can choose from private self-catering guesthouses and grand hotels, such as the Lanzerac Hotel and Spa. The hotel boasts its strong heritage with Cape Dutch architecture on a 300 year old country estate in Stellenbosch. Alternatively, if you are a big fan of the outdoors, why not enjoy a Western Cape safari experience? If night game drives, hiking, mountain biking, canoeing and swimming in rock pools is more your style, venture 270km out of the city to the Cederberg Mountains, where you will reach the award winning Bushmans Kloof retreat, set among sandstone formations.
This South African Heritage site is proud host to ancient San rock art as well as indigenous flaura and fauna, ensuring that your stay there is not only aesthetically wonderful, but a cultural and historical journey.

Exclusive Getaways offers expert advice and bespoke services to discerning travellers
For nearly 20 years, Exclusive Getaways has been a trusted name in South African travel and safari tours. With an unflagging passion for South Africa’s natural and cultural heritage, Exclusive Getaways is the destination specialist of choice for luxury travel in and around South Africa.
“For many travellers, a South African safari is a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” says Exclusive Getaways’ Operations Manager Sandra Wewege. “As such, we feel it’s crucial that our clients enjoy only the very best that South Africa has to offer. Our long-standing relationships with our suppliers, as well as our experience in the South African travel and safari industry, means that Exclusive Getaways is uniquely positioned to provide an exceptional, bespoke safari travel service to our clients.”
Bespoke safaris in South Africa are an Exclusive Getaways speciality, and there is plenty of choice when it comes to choosing where to go. “When most people think about safaris in South Africa, the first place they think of is the Kruger Park,” continues Wewege. “While the Kruger National Park offers excellent game viewing and a number of fantastic luxury lodges, particularly in the Sabi Sands, there are many other places where one can enjoy a Big Five safari in South Africa.”
For families travelling with small children, a safari in a malaria-free area might be more attractive. The Eastern Cape boasts a number of National Parks and private game reserves which present a variety of malaria-free safari options to visitors. “The Eastern Cape is an excellent safari destination. In addition to pristine and richly diverse game parks as well as wonderful safari accommodation and activities, the province is also very accessible. A safari in the Eastern Cape is the perfect add-on to a self-drive up the Garden Route and many of the parks and reserves are a relatively short drive from Port Elizabeth airport,” says Wewege.
Similarly, another excellent big game safari park is the Madikwe Game Reserve in South Africa’s North West Province. Closer to Gauteng, those wishing to experience a South African safari in style may choose to book accommodation in the Pilanesberg National Park or the beautiful Welgevonden Nature Reserve.
“Combined travel experience of over 100 years and expert on-the-ground knowledge sets Exclusive Getaways apart from the crowd,” says Wewege.
Exclusive Getaways specialises in tailoring high-end tours and getaways for individual travellers or groups. A portfolio of over 100 establishments throughout South Africa, each hand-picked as a gem with its own unique brand of appeal, enables Exclusive Getaways to create the perfect personalised holiday for the discerning traveller. From cosmopolitan city escapes to the finest bush lodges and tranquil coastal chalets, Exclusive Getaways is the definitive choice for booking travel in South Africa.

Big Safaris For The Small Set
South Africa shelters some of the most pristine tracts of wilderness on earth, roamed by an impressive variety of wildlife. Safaris in South Africa is fast becoming a family affair as more and more private lodges open their doors to the younger set and cater superbly to children’s specific needs.
In the North-West Province, adjacent to the Botswana border, lies the Madikwe Game Reserve, one of South Africa’s largest reserves spanning some 75 000 hectares. This is an enchanting region of vast open woodlands, grasslands and scattered hillocks that has long captured the imaginations of writers and artists. Madikwe has great appeal for families, for not only does it incorporate some outstanding child-friendly lodges, but it also falls outside the risk areas for malaria.
A dream come true for children, Jaci’s Safari Lodge and Jaci’s Tree Lodge are popular hideaways in the Madikwe Reserve, which can be reached ex Johannesburg in three hours. These trendy lodges are set under a forest canopy on the banks of the Marico River, and both are wonderfully comfy. Safari Lodge sports shaggy thatched roofs, private decks, fireplaces and outdoor safari-showers. Tree Lodge is a real delight and enough to capture any child’s imagination. Tree houses have been crafted around giant trees and are linked to the central areas by timber walkways. A special children’s programme includes kiddies’ jungle drives, orientation in tracking and bush detection skills, lots of experiential learning, special children’s mealtimes and child-minding services. The lodge owners, Jaci and Jan, have children of their own, and their lodges are fully geared up to provide a rewarding experience for all.
Another upscale lodge in malaria-free Madikwe that welcomes children is Tau Game Lodge. The Cubz Club Kiddies’ Programme provides each participant with a backpack containing activity booklets and checklists. Tau guides lead various bush-oriented activities such as treasure hunts and shortened safari excursions. Children 0-3 years sharing with parents stay free, there’s a nominal cost for children aged 3-5, while children aged 6-12 pay 50% of the rate. While the kids are busily exploring the bush, parents are free to indulge in a spa treatment or two.
Moving out of Madikwe and into Mpumalanga, the game-teeming Sabi Sand Reserve features Sir Richard Branson’s private safari lodge, Ulusaba. It’s child-friendly and welcomes children of all ages to Rock Lodge, a stylish lodge resting on the summit of a rocky hill, where views are expansive. The Ulusaba Cubs Club has been designed for the small set. Children are taken on treasure hunts, entertained with African stories and educational games, and provided with special kiddies’ fare.
Set in the Timbavati Reserve adjacent to the Kruger National Park, Thornysbush Game Lodge is another appealing destination for a family safari. Respected as “little rangers in training”, young guests receive a special children’s pack on arrival at the lodge, they get taken on tailor-made kiddies’ drives and walks, and immerse themselves in the skill of animal tracking. Rat packs of tasty provisions accompany them on all excursions!

Cape Winelands – Western Cape Getaways
If it’s true, as the idiom goes, that “old friends and old wine are best” then it comes as no surprise that the Cape Winelands feature prominently on every visitor’s to-do list. A utopia of fertile valleys, rolling vineyards, magnificent Cape Dutch gabled homesteads and a viticulture tradition that’s hard to beat, the Winelands are a huge drawcard for holidays in Cape Town.
There are over 200 cellars in the Cape Winelands, which hold the secrets that have produced some of the world’s finest vintages for 350 years. South Africa’s organic wine growing practices are also steadily gaining momentum. Wine tasting there is aplenty, and visitors can look forward to tasting some of the very best.
The exquisite Constantia Valley – resting at the foot of the Constantiaberg Mountains and no more than 20 minutes away from the city – has yielded superb wines for more than three centuries. Groot Constantia was the original wine farm in Constantia, established in 1684 and cultivated by Dutch Colonial Governor Simon Van der Stel. Explore the scenic Constantiaberg Valley on a day trip, or better still, spend a few luxurious nights in the area at either Constantia Uitsig Hotel & Spa or The Cellars-Hohenort, both of which have some charming historic features along with modern creature comforts.
Stellenbosch is the best known of the wine regions in the Western Cape, and some of the country’s most acclaimed wines have originated here. The town of Stellenbosch is the second oldest in South Africa, and is known for its oak-lined streets and many monument-status places of interest. It lies in the picturesque Jonkershoek Valley and is little more than an hour’s drive from Cape Town. Stay at the intimate River Manor Boutique Hotel & Spa on the outskirts of town, or at Lanzerac Hotel & Spa, a prestigious estate immortalizing old-world grandeur laced with all the mod cons that ensure contentment.
Paarl (56 km away from Cape Town) is another exquiste Winelands town, basking in the beauty of Africa’s largest granite rock and exhibiting some marvelous examples of old Cape Dutch architecture. Here you will find an excellent base at Grande Roche Hotel, a superbly restored 18th century homestead and top-class hotel set amid the vineyards and offering the best of everything, including on-site tastings.
Franschhoek is a delightful French enclave in the Winelands, originally settled by French Huguenots more than 300 years ago. The town lays claim to several of South Africa’s best restaurants and is within half an hour of Stellenbosch and Paarl. Le Quartier Français is one of the town’s landmarks, offering a chic, contemporary base, superlative award-winning food, consoling body treatments and its own trendy theatre. There’s also Franschhoek Country House & Villas, offering rooms in the manor house and gardens, or spacious 100 square metre villas. Franschhoek is a meanderer’s dream, dotted with pavement cafes, arts-and-craft shops, antique stores and galleries.
Other Winelands towns to visit include Wellington (the superbly scenic Bain’s Kloof Pass is a must), Tulbagh, Robertson, Worcester and Somerset West. The semi-arid Little Karoo, bounded by the Swartberg and Langeberg Mountains, also produces some quality wines, among them dry and fortified wines and pot-stilled brandies.
When you’ve had your fill of wine tasting, the Winelands have many other activities in store, including horse trails, fruit routes, golf, butterfly world, cheese tasting, museums and galleries, hot air ballooning, hiking trails, and lots more.

Gauteng: A traveller’s pot of gold
Most local South Africans, when asked about Gauteng, would mention something along the lines of gold, money or business. Gauteng actually means “Place of Gold” and it is most definitely South Africa’s financial capital. However, all work and no play isn’t much fun!
Gauteng Country Getaways
The Magaliesberg region is a country paradise of mountains, streams and lush valleys in which a number of superb country getaways are situated. The Magaliesberg Mountains, west of Johannesburg, feature scenic hiking and 4X4 trails. If you are a 4×4 enthusiast and quite advanced in terms of your driving skills, venture to the south-west of Johannesburg to Hennops, which offers a variety of routes that take anything from an hour to four hours to complete. The routes include difficult axle-twisters on up-hills and rocky climbs to really get the adrenalin rushing!
Balloon Safaris
If you are looking for an adventurous outing for the whole family, include a trip to the Magalies River Valley. Only 65km away from Johannesburg, hot air ballooning in Skeerpoort gives you the chance to gently float over the beautiful landscape followed by a champagne breakfast. It is advised that only children seven and older be allowed on these balloon safaris.
Gauteng’s other attractions include exhilarating Balloon Safaris, the Dinokeng Nature Reserve, water sports at the Hartbeespoort Dam, the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens and the Lion Park, to name just a few.
The Lion Park, which is located just outside Johannesburg, is one of the very few places where visitors can see the rare white lion. There are over 80 lions at the Park, as well as a number of other carnivores such as cheetahs, wild dogs and the brown hyena. A popular attraction at Lion Park is Cub World, where you can get up-close and personal with lion cubs, interact with them and even take a few photographs.
Back to Beginnings
Gauteng unlocks some of the mysteries about the beginning of humankind. Declared a World Heritage Site in 2000, the Sterkfontein Caves were aptly named the “Cradle of Humankind”. Back in 1947 an archaeologist by the name of Dr. Broom discovered a complete skull of an adult female dating back between 2.6 and 2.8 million years, the oldest yet found. Excavations continue, and tourists are given the privilege to go down into the caves and explore for themselves. Even the kids can get their hands a little dirty here.
The cultural side of Gauteng
Gauteng features numerous museums and galleries, as well as Gold Reef City, a large entertainment complex which transports you back to the time when gold was first discovered in the Johannesburg area. A combination of fun, facts and fantasy should keep you and your family suitably entertained.
Although South Africa’s smallest province, Gauteng is also one of its most cosmopolitan and offers diverse experiences. Exclusive Getaways consultants can recommend a fine selection of accommodation choices during your stay when making an Exclusive Getaways booking.

Durban: South Africa’s Tropical Playground
South Africa is a beautiful and diverse country. Each of its nine provinces has a distinct appeal.
South Africa’s favourite domestic holiday destination is KwaZulu-Natal. Some of the most notable features in the province are the Drakensberg Mountain Range and the beautiful coastline areas and historic battlefields but the capital city is the biggest draw-card for local and international tourists alike.
Durban city
The bustling city of Durban has a warm sub-tropical climate with weather that stays pleasant almost all year round, making this the perfect holiday destination. Often described as South Africa’s very own Miami Beach, this cosmopolitan city offers a cultural experience unlike the rest of South Africa.
A rich Zulu heritage is intertwined with the large Indian community that came into existence under South Africa’s British rule.
The strong Indian cultural influence has led to one of the most well-known characteristics of Durban, the Natal curries. It’s recommended that visitors try a sample of these dishes which range from mild curry to the hottest Vindaloo imaginable!
On a stroll down Grey Street, Indian vendors and bazaars will introduce visitors to many varieties of Indian delicacies and Durban’s very own contribution to world cuisine: the Bunny Chow. This is a simple dish that consists of a hollowed out loaf of bread filled with curry, made from either beef, mutton, chicken or beans.
Accommodation in Durban ranges from luxury five -star hotels to cosy guesthouses, but location is very important. The most prominent suburbs in Durban are the Berea, the Bluff, Durban Central and Durban North, Glenashley, Glenmore, Glenwood and Morningside. The latter is an upmarket suburb offering classic examples of large Victorian architecture and is ideally situated within easy reach of the main attractions and activities available throughout this vibrant city.
The beachfront
Durban is all about the beaches. The warm waters of the Indian Ocean lap the golden sandy beachfront which is lined with palm trees. The beach stretches for miles on end and is a playground paradise for many sun-worshippers and water sport enthusiasts. The Golden Mile is Durban’s most popular strip and stretches from South Beach, where uShaka Marine World is located, all the way to the North where the Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World lies.
Water sports such as body boarding, sailing and scuba diving can be enjoyed by tourists but the biggest draw is Durban’s reputation as a surfing capital. During the month of July the annual Mr. Price Pro World Surfing Championship takes place here. There is a big local surfing community and the laidback impression surfers make is very obvious and quite infectious.
One of Durban’s premier attractions is uShaka Marina World; a world-class entertainment hub located at South Beach which stretches over an impressive 15 hectares, making it Africa’s largest marine theme park. As well as the impressive aquarium, there are many restaurants where one can enjoy scrumptious seafood. There is also an extensive range of retail stores and boutiques at uShaka that feature arts and crafts, outdoor gear as well as locally produced items.
At uShaka Marine World’s Dolphin Stadium, the antics of these intelligent creatures never fail to entertain visitors. At the Wet ‘n Wild World there is something to entertain every member of the family including swimming pools, river rides, sandy beaches, and high speed chutes. Other interactive activities and highlights include the touch rock pool, coral gardens, a penguin breeding colony, an 8 metre long window to gaze into the open ocean and the Deep Zone where some of the most bizarre and spectacular sea creatures are revealed. ‘Dangers of the Deep’ brings visitors up-close to several of the ocean’s most feared creatures including sharks, sea snakes and the devil fire fish.
Other attractions and activities
The International Conference Centre (ICC) has been nominated as Africa’s leading conference centre for six consecutive years. As a focal point for the business district, the main attraction at the ICC is the continual events that include expos, festivals and fairs which attract both local and international business.
Tourists who have a fondness for wildlife, birding and eco-tourism will enjoy trips to the Botanical Gardens, Snake Park or the Umgeni River Bird Park. As one of Durban’s greatest attractions, the Umgeni River Bird Park is located on the banks of the Umgeni River. The park welcomes tourists to a journey through beautiful green vegetation complemented with some amazing rock faces and waterfalls in the walk-through aviaries.
While in Durban, tourists with a penchant for shopping should indulge in a day of retail therapy at Gateway, the “Theatre of Shopping”. With more than 280 stores, this modern mall also boasts an extraordinary recreational centre. At a staggering 24 meters, the indoor climbing wall at Gateway is the world’s highest, and adrenalin junkies are sure to enjoy the experience. There is also a skate park that was designed by legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk, who also officially opened it. Other attractions at the Gateway shopping centre include ten pin bowling, go carts, bumper cars, mini golf, a foofie slide and an IMAX theatre. The Surf and Extreme Sports Centre Wavehouse is where amateur surfers can learn to surf on artificially made waves under the watchful eye of local professionals.
Durban really is South Africa’s playground! With so much to do in a city that has perfect weather conditions almost all year round, you are sure to enjoy it too!
