There’s no place on earth like Addo Elephant National Park for seeing elephants at whisper-close range. And now that the park has expanded, the prospect of a safari in Addo is more exciting than ever. That the area is free of malaria, is of course also a huge drawcard, especially for families travelling with young children.
A fence-cutting ceremony has officially marked the extension of Addo National Elephant Park in the Eastern Cape to 24 000 hectares. This links two areas stretching from the Addo Main Camp to Camp Matyholweni rest camp near Colchester on the Algoa Bay coast. Elephants, lion, hyena and other animals will now roam freely across to the Colchester area of the Park, where buffalo, zebra and antelopes have already been introduced. Development of this area has included roads, fencing, the building of a rest camp, and removal of old fence lines and invasive vegetation.
There are several superb lodges in the Addo area – ones that deliver copious doses of luxury while accommodating you in just the right place for daily drives into the park.
RiverBend is a fabulous 5-star lodge 70 km away from Port Elizabeth, offering a wonderful all-round blend of bushveld adventure and country house hospitality. RiverBend’s large and luxurious suites have never-ending views from private verandahs. Here you can enjoy game drives in Addo or in RiverBend’s Private Intsomi Reserve. You also have the option of an awe-inspiring elephantback safari, viewing wildlife on horseback, a cultural excursion or a citrus tour.
Another excellent choice – also 5-star – is Woodall Country House. The lodge is situated on a citrus farm in the Sundays River Valley, not far from the park, and has its own safari vehicle for game drives. When you’re not viewing ellies in the park, you have a magnificent waterside location to enjoy back at the lodge, along with the options of spa treatments and use of very stylish leisure facilities.
The Safari Lodge in the Amakhala Game Reserve also comes highly recommended. Situated close to the Addo Elephant National Park, this is an intimate lodge where guests are well and truly indulged in 5-star style. Luxury suites are spacious and look out on an active waterhole. What makes this a great safari stay, is that you can enjoy an exciting combination of activities on the Amakhala reserve and in the Addo Elephant National Park.
