The Turtle Season begins on 1 November and extends until the end of February. It’s really very awesome to meet these creatures at night, down on Mabibi Bay’s long stretches of beach sands, where Loggerhead and Leatherback females come up to lay their eggs.  These magnificent creatures return to the Maputuland coastline every year – to the very beach where they themselves once hatched, having swum the full length of the African continent.

Thonga Beach Lodge has its own very special place on this pristine shoreline, just metres above the high-water mark. Lodge staff live close to the ocean and all its miraculous secrets, and are well equipped to take you out on guided night excursions – walks and beach drives – when the chances of seeing the turtles are good.  If you find the turtles, your Thonga guides will check them for tags, scan them for microchips, measure their width and length and take the GPS of the nest.  It’s really very exciting to be a  part of all this, and to watch the turtles as they lay their eggs.

Research has shown that the mother turtle keeps returning to the same beach to lay her eggs, and what’s more, she lays her eggs within metres of the place where she herself emerged as a hatchling years previously.

The new hatchlings make their appearance from the nest about 60 days after being laid. Their emergence is a real miracle, after digging 40cm to the surface and crawling some 50m to the sea, where they often fall prey to kingfish and seabirds. The survival rate is less than one in 50.

Turtle tracking is offered at Thonga Beach Lodge from November to the end of February in the evenings. There are also other wonderful activities at Thonga, and an abundance of exclusive barefoot luxury. Get more info from our Getaway Consultants.
