The first of the season’s Humpback Whales have been spotted offshore from Thonga Beach Lodge in KwaZulu-Natal!
Humpback whales visit the shores of Kwa Zulu-Natal each year from June through to November. The whales make their way to their breeding grounds off the Mozambique coast, after which they return to the waters of Antarctica.
Making a trip to watch these whales is a fantastic experience at Thonga Beach Lodge, which is secluded, romantic and big on ocean adventures. The Humpback Whale is about 15m long and weighs in the region of 30 tons. They are well known for their spectacular breaching performances.
Guests at Thonga Beach Lodge can watch the whales on the Open Ocean Experience, or station themselves on tall sand dunes to spot breaching whales in the bay. The Open Ocean Experience is a wonderful opportunity to experience the diversity of marine life along the Elephant Coast. An exciting boat trip takes you beyond the surf to a world of dolphins, whales and whale sharks. You may be lucky enough to swim with dolphins or whale sharks or snorkel with manta rays and giant turtles.
Thonga Beach Lodge is set on the pristine shores of the Maputuland coast. This luxury lodge rests in dune forest just above one of the most unspoilt wilderness beaches left on the African continent. Mabibi Bay is a magical place of coastal forests, lakes and long sandy beaches. Its temperate waters offer South Africa’s best snorkelling and fantastic off-shore scuba diving.
Scuba diving at Mabibi Bay is spectacular, with reefs located a short distance from the lodge. Shoals of game fish, sharks and schools of bottlenose dolphins are often seen. The diving team at the lodge accommodates all enthusiasts from first-timers to experienced divers. No less than 1,250 fish species occur on the reefs in this area!
