This singularly unique hotel on Knysna’s Thesen Islands has had an amazing metamorphosis from old gas station to plush hotel. In its gorgeous new guise, The Turbine Hotel and Spa entices guests with everything required for an unforgettable stay on the Garden Route.
Hardly more than a year old – or new rather, The Turbine has basked repeatedly in the appreciative gaze of high-end media. It made dazzling appearances in Top Billing and Kwela, and graced the pages of Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Elle, Finance Week and Top Billing magazine. That’s not all. Sandton Magazine, South Magazine and no less than 5 design and architectural publications also rallied to give coverage to this marvelously creative resurrection of an old turbine plant as a state-of-the-art Garden Route hotel.
It was once the second oldest power station in South Africa. Fresh and funky now, the hotel stands on Thesen Islands surrounded by water on three sides. It has two bars, two restaurants, a spa, and 24 beautiful, differently themed suites.
Most of the primary components of the power station were left in place to form part of the turbine-theme of the hotel. Original turbines, mechanical equipment, operating panels and large sections of piping have been creatively incorporated. In addition, numerous small pieces of equipment, including gauges, switches, buttons and dials, have been retained to great effect.
The hotel has recently launched The Turbine Water Club, which offers various activities to guests. This is also where you can sit back to al fresco dining from the deli, or enjoy Knysna’s celebrated oysters from the champagne bar.
