Tau Game Lodge in the Madikwe has ushered in five crocs to the waterhole in front of the lodge. The new quintet hails from a crocodile farm in Groot Marico, and what happy landings to have arrived at Tau. So do look out for them on your next visit to this wonderful lodge.

The new kids on the block are just three years old, but even so they’re already two metres long!  A male croc was Number 1 Release and he immediately started exploring the waterhole, after which the remaining four were released one at a time. All the newcomers – notched for identification purposes – are biding their time in a holding area on one side of the waterhole, where they will be given time to adapt to their new environment. They’ll be basking on their custom-created sand bar, and thanks to a croc-proof fence, the toothy team will not stray from their demarcated lodgings in the direction of the lodge and chalets.

The survival of crocodiles hangs in a precarious balance as a result of large-scale croc-hunting during the 1950 and 60’s. What a great step it is for Tau to be taking this anti-extinction initiative.
