World Heritage Site status is probably enough of a reason to go and visit this 36 000 hectare utopia, but let’s also name a few of De Hoop’s specific drawcards:

- It’s one of the best breeding grounds for whales in the world – about 40% of the world’s Southern Right Whales come to breed here annually.
- De Hoop’s has one of the largest protected marine areas in Africa.
- Secluded beaches make wonderfully scenic hideouts for swimming and picnicking.
- There are 7 different eco systems at De Hoop, supporting no less than 1 500 plant species, 86 mammal species and 260 bird species.
- It’s an easy scenic drive from Cape Town and Hermanus.
Here’s what you can enjoy in the reserve:
- Bike your way through herds of eland, bontebok and other species with a field guide who will share his knowledge of the reserve;
- Go on guided game drives;
- Do some stargazing & star identification;
- Go on an Interpretive Marine Walk that takes you to coastal rock pools and sandy beaches, accompanied by a guide who points out interesting marine life forms. Between June and December you’re bound to see whales on this walk;
- Go on a guided Bird & Fynbos walk.
A safe destination with almost year-round good weather, De Hoop is a wonderful place for family holidays. De Hoop’s long beach, massive sand dunes, tidal rock pools and variety of animals and plants create a magnificent natural playground for curious, energetic children. There is so much to do at De Hoop that anything less than 2 nights is just a taster begging for a longer stay.
