It doesn’t really matter whether you say Magaliesberg (the area) or Magaliesburg (the town), the magical Magaliesberg is a stretch of countryside that runs the length of the ancient Magaliesberg mountains, and makes a convincing plea as a no-regrets retreat for soul-weary city folk.

The Kgaswane Mountain Reserve protects 5 300 hectares of beauty close to Rustenburg.  Hike or bike your way through the reserve – which is hometurf to over 800 antelope of different species, and 320 varieties of birds.  Tel 014 533-2050.

Visit the Elephant Sanctuary which provides a temporary home for ellies and strives to relocate them where they can live more self-sufficiently. Tel 012 258-0423.

The succesful Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre has bred more than 800 cubs since its inception in 1971. Acquaint yourself with its various conservation projects. Tel 012 504-9906.

Vist the Maropeng Visitor Centre and see fossils, learn about the origins of humankind, view stone tools up to 1-million years old, take an underground boat ride, and more.  Tel 014 577-9000.

Stop by at Van Gaalen’s to sample a range of cheeses whilst drinking in the views of the valley. From here, you can also take a scenic mountain bike trail. Tel 012 207-1289.

Herb enthusiasts will be in their element in the beautiful gardens of the Margaret Roberts Herbal Centre. There’s also a nursery, coffee stop and crystal shop there. Tel 012 504-2121.
