Mhondoro Lodge is a fantastic option if you want to beat it to the bush in grand style without travelling too far. Only a 2,5 hour drive from Johannesburg, Mhondoro rests on a rocky outcrop in the Welgevonden Private Game Reserve in Limpopo, with vast views of the bushveld. With a waterhole situated in front of the main lodge, wildlife viewing  from pound seats doesn’t ever stop. By air, Mhondoro Lodge is a one hour flight from Lanseria.

The Lodge

With less than a handful of villas, privacy is a given. What is abundant, though, is beauty.  The Welgevonden is an enchanting landscape of wooded mountains severed by deep ravines and stony gorges, and criss-crossed by flowing rivers. Wild animals and birds are plentiful, and malaria presents no risk. The reserve offers the dual attraction of excellent game viewing and breathcatching wilderness scenery. In its rocky caverns and overhangs, it also shelters ancient Bushman art.

Special Offer for South African Residents is valid until 24 March 2013.

The Reserve

37 500 Hectares in extent, Welgevonden has one of the largest populations of white rhino on a private reserve anywhere in Africa. At least fifty different mammal species are found there, including the Big Five, many kinds of antelope, and the less frequently seen brown hyena, aardvark and aardwolf. Environmental impact is monitored carefully, which means that no private vehicles are allowed in the reserve.

The Safari

Join Mhondoro’s energetic rangers on safari and experience the wonderful ways of the wilderness. Game drives take place every day, in the early morning and in the late afternoon / early evening. Sundown in the bush is a perfectly magical snatch of day. You’ll stop to take in the unforgettable face of the bush at sunset, with a chilled sundowner in hand.  Bush walks offer a different, and very intimate sense of the bush, bringing an appreciation of things small and intriguing. These are led by rangers in the know, each with his / her own areas of specialization.

Rock Art

Take a trip to the Bushman paintings and be transported back two thousand years in time, to the days when the San people inhabited Welgevonden. A rock art trip is a wonderful add-on to a safari in Welgevonden.

Spoils

Mhondoro Lodge is a real treat. Recently refurbed, it breathes pure luxury. The cuisine is also superb, with different menus and dining spots providing novelty each day. Traditional South African barbeques around a fire are one of the highlights.

Spa treatments are yet another way to unwind in the wilderness. These happen in a beautifully harmonious setting, and are exquisitely revitalising after hours spent in the bush.
