Whales and wine? Well, yes, unlikely bedfellows in some respects perhaps, but when it comes to combining the Western Cape’s most precious gems, what a perfect pairing! And better still when the pair becomes a trio with the addition of some fine music. The De Hoop Collection has brought these Cape treasures together into an exciting Wine, Whales and Music Weekend, to take place on 27-29 July 2012.

This season’s Southern Right whale visitors have already arrived in the breeding waters of the De Hoop Nature Reserve. More than 40% of the world’s Southern Right whales come into these waters to mate, calve and protect their young through the first months. Sightings are truly spectacular from the reserve’s perfect vantage points, and there are often so many whales that the waters begin to resemble a well-populated tadpole tank from the high dunes.

Book this special weekend package at De Hoop and view plenty of whales. A special marine walk is planned for Sunday morning at low tide, to visit the whales with a guide who has a wealth of knowledge to share about the hidden rock pool life of the De Hoop coastline.

The weekend will also include the music of Malané Hofmeyr-Burger and her string and flute ensemble. They will be performing their Whale Time Serenade featuring items by Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart, Bach, Donizetti and Purcell, with some more contemporary pieces too.

And then there’s also the third part of the trio, the wine … Overberg wine estates Black Oyster Catcher,  Creation, Jean Daneel,  Quoin Rock, The Berrio,  Zoetendal, Lomond,  Brunia Strandveld/First Sighting and Lands End will be there to offer you tastings of their wonderful elixirs.
