The Garden Route is aburst with holiday activities to suit all tastes. These are some of the animal sanctuaries near Plettenberg Bay, popular with families and lovers of creatures great, small, exotic and in some cases, endangered.

Birds of Eden at The Crags near Plettenberg Bay is a wonderworld beneath a huge dome creating an aviary for some 3500 birds in a beautiful, indigenous forest. Meander along wooden walkways to marvel at a hundreds upon hundreds of free-flight African birds, including several endangered species. The sanctuary features several dams, one of which has a floating bridge where meals can be ordered, as well as a spectacular canopy walk and a large amphitheatre.

As the world’s first free-roaming, multi-species primate sanctuary, Monkeyland is unique. Situated at The Crags near Plettenberg Bay, Monkeyland offers tours for viewing of multiple species of monkeys, lemurs, gibbons, and other primates in a lush forest sanctuary. The 128-metre suspended canopy walk provides spectacular forest views.

At Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre at Plettenberg Bay visitors have the chance to meet captive-bred felines, such as cheetah and leopard, African Wild Cat, Serval and Caracal, living in a semi-natural environment.  You can also see Meerkats, Blue Cranes and Marabou Storks. Also, there’s the option of a walk through the Tsitsikamma Forest with the Tenikwa Cheetahs.

Plettenberg Bay Elephant Sanctuary is situated adjacent to Birds of Eden and Monkeyland. Learn about elephant habits and behaviour, touch, feed and walk trunk-in-hand with them, and take a short elephant-back ride.

Noah’s Park & Wolf Sanctuary in Plettenberg Bay is home to a variety of wildlife and farmyard animals, and of particular note are the magnificent ‘rescue’ wolves in residence there. There are also African Wild Dog and Black Backed Jackal. The farmyard animals can be petted and fed.
