So the whole family sets off on a bumper safari and arrives at family-friendly Tuningi Safari Lodge, a five-star hideaway deep in the wilderness of the North-West’s Madikwe Game Reserve, with over 75 000 hectares of wild adventure-territory at your feet. But let’s not jump the gun – getting there comes first: that’s a 4-hour drive from Johannesburg or a 50-minute scheduled flight from Joburg to the reserve.

Arriving is a twofold process. There’s the getting-there kind of arrival – the cheery hellos from the staff, that refreshing welcome drink to dilute the journey, and having your luggage whisked away to arrive at your suite ahead of you. And then there’s also that other, magical, kind of arrival in the bush, that happens as your being begins to give slack to its tight, cramped places and to rest into the great silent rhythms of the bush.

Bush-View Living Spaces

The fabulous thing about being at a luxury safari lodge is how the outside is always so tangibly alive from the inside! This is certainly true at Tuningi. The central lodge is a thatched haven of gorgeous indoor / outdoor lounges, a stylish dining room and a ‘come-hither’ rim-flow pool that gazes out towards the waterhole.  These living spaces are linked by a wooden viewing deck, which also leads to a wonderful night-time space – a roofless boma under an ancient tree. This is where you will dine around the fireside in the evenings, swopping your prized bush stories with wild animals well within earshot.

If you’re lucky enough to be one of Tuningi’s 16 guests, a luxurious suite will be your bush abode. These are large and private, and they bring the bush indoors as much as possible. Air-conditioning, fans, fireplaces, en-suite bathrooms, outdoor showers and wrap-around viewing decks are standard.

Family Safaris
If you’re taking the kids, you could book a Family Suite, or for something really special and private, you could treat yourself to a stay at the sole-use pad Little Tuningi. Here 6 guests luxuriate in their very own den of bush comfort, complete with all-suite accommodation, lounge and dining room, kitchenette, bush-viewing deck, private pool and mini outdoor boma.

Children of all ages have a grand safari at Tuningi

Bring the children to Tuningi, no matter what their age. (Free of malaria, the Madikwe Reserve is an excellent family holiday choice.) If they’re over 5, they can join the first game drive with their parents to see how they do, and if advisable, they’ll be offered their own special drives dedicated to young ones. Post-brekkie ‘bumbles’ take place every day, as well as treasure hunts, T-shirt painting with animal stencils, clay-building competitions and track tracing. In the evenings kids have fun making their own stick-bread and toasting marshmallows on the fire. Trained staff are on hand to care for babies, and this is charged for separately.

Adults have a fantastic safari under the wing of their rangers, meeting the Big Five and lots more on two 4×4 drives daily. You can also go on optional walkabouts – ranger-accompanied of course, to appreciate the small miracles of the wilderness. Enhance the safari experience with the odd massage in your room.
