The Knysna Forest covers an area of about 300 000 hectares and is well known for its massive old Outeniqua Yellowwoods. Some of these Yellowwoods are nearly a thousand years old. The forest is also home to the tree hyrax, samango monkey, blue duiker, honey badger and the long-tailed forest shrew. At one time elephants used to roam the forests, of which there are perhaps just a few remaining now. The Knysna Forest has been denuded of its timber since the 18th century, but is now mostly protected. The Forest Legends Museum has some intriguing exhibits and is worth visiting. Knysna has many furniture and curio outlets selling items made from wood harvested in the famous forests.
