Heaven-sent shows of citrus blossom, spirals of fragrant orange peel and bowls of sun-bright yellow lemons – citrus is king at beautiful Woodall Country House and Spa, a private haven of country bliss set on a citrus farm near Addo Elephant National Park in the Eastern Cape. Woodall has many highlights – among them its gorgeous waterside setting, palm-fringed pool-garden, a spa, fabulous wine cellar, and daily guided drives into Addo. The food is most certainly a high point too, delicately crafted from the best of the region’s homegrown goodies.
Feast on ostrich, Karoo lamb and venison, free-range poultry, freshly-caught East Coast fish and local artisan cheeses. The bounty harvested in the citrus orchards does, of course, also feature most beautifully in Woodall’s cuisine. Veggies and herbs are grown and harvested on site and arrive very freshly on your plate. The award-winning wine cellar houses a comprehensive collection of top-of-the-range South African wines, hand-picked by James, the owner.
In good weather you will dine under African skies on an open deck near a lake. It couldn’t be a more enchanting spot, with its birds and waterfowl to keep you company. Best of all are moonlit dinners on a clear night, at the water’s edge.
The day begins with a farm-style breakfast feast of eggs and bacon, homemade breads, pastries, muffins, jams and preserves. Lunches are delectable yet simple, and also enjoyed outdoors. The deck, the poolside and your own your private patio provide a variety of lunch spots. The area lends itself to picnics, so be sure to request a picnic basket at least once during your stay. For conscious health-watchers, Woodall’s spa cuisine is a delight.
