Pafuri is a phenomenal and diverse region in the northernmost part of the Kruger National Park in South Africa. It is bordered by Zimbabwe to the north and Mozambique to the east, and is renowned for its incredible biodiversity, and magnificent landscapes criss-crossed by rivers and inhabited by a great variety of wildlife. Pafuri is also a bird-watching paradise, and much more outlying than the more frequently visited parts of Kruger Park.
The Pafuri Wilderness, its Wildlife and Birds
Pafuri is a mix of dense forests, baobab trees, riverine habitats and floodplains, rocky outcrops and open savannah plains. The Limpopo and Luvuvhu Rivers ensure the life of the region, providing an essential water source for the huge array of wildlife that call this area home. The Makuleke wetlands are a listed Ramsar Site, being of international importance. Also of immense interest are the traces of early humankind that have been found in the Pafuri area.
Pafuri’s birdlife is one of the great attractions of this area. With over 350 bird species recorded in the region, and a great many tropical birds, it is a birdwatcher’s heaven-on-earth. Rare birds can be seen here, including the Pel’s Fishing Owl, Bat Hawk, and African Broadbill.
The Pafuri area is also home to a wide range of other wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, hyenas, hippos and crocodiles, and a number of antelope species.
Where to Stay in Pafuri
The Outpost is an exclusive safari haven concealed in the remote and very beautiful Makuleke Contractual Park in the Pafuri area of Kruger National Park. Exquisitely unique, The Outpost is a 12-suite hillside sanctuary making optimal use of space, with state-of the art retractable screens providing uninterrupted views of the beautiful Luvuvhu River Valley. Award-winning bathrooms and outdoor terraces with daybeds are a huge spoil.
Pel’s Post is an opulent satellite lodge at The Outpost, accommodating eight guests in four exquisite suites, and available to families and small groups on a sole-use basis. A stay at either of these lodges is a very special opportunity to experience a unique and remarkable wild landscape and to enjoy splendid exclusivity in camp.
Getting There
The Outpost is 650 km from Johannesburg, about a 7-hour drive and a 1-hour-40-minute charter flight. For guests travelling there by road, both self-drive and road transfers are options. On entering the concession, the Lodge is a 20-minute scenic drive away, and wildlife may well be seen along the way.
Refuelling and Cell Signal
For your trip please note that the last service station is at Tshipise on the route, about 120 km before The Outpost, so this is the place to refuel. There is no refuelling opportunity at Pafuri Gate. Tshipise is also where you will have the last cell phone signal before reaching The Outpost.
